We covered Meeker's last trends report from December 2012 and now she’s got a new one to feast on! Here are some crazy facts Meeker presents around mobile adoption:
- Mobile usage growth has increased 30% over the last year
- Mobile makes up 15% of total internet traffic
- Mobile ads only make up 11% of total internet ad spend
- Smartphone adoption has a LONG way to go…with only 1.5 (out of 5) billion users! (I bet you didn’t see that one coming) (1)
One of the most interesting trends Meeker points out is the transition to wearable technology. Nike Fuel bands are just one example (from her slide below) of this move toward the quantified self.
This explosive technological growth has left Americans with a compulsive need for information. The average daily time spent on-line is 3 hours, 7 minutes. (2) Meeker points to the rise of social media and Youtube, vying for viewer attention in every possible sphere.
So what does this mean for the digital world and online businesses? It means that attention is currency and content is king. The longer viewers spend on site (which is only 3 – 4 minutes on average!), the greater the opportunity you have to share content and build gratitude. Ultimately, grateful consumers will share that content and before you know it…you’ll be riding that exponential growth curve to financial success.
